EMILY MANWARNING

Emily is one of my favorite artist, for she captures such beauty in her portraits, with an addition of her abstract mind. I’ve came across Emily through one of my closet friends, and i couldn’t keep my eyes off of her work since. She was one of the artist i knew i had to have in my first issue, because she is far beyond her time. As i do with all of my submissions, I've asked her a few questions and inccoperated it around her art, so you can get some more insight behind her stellar pieces.

What materials do your commonly use and why?

In my artwork I commonly use oil paint and acrylic. I love the way oil paint gives me the flexibility to blend skin tones within my portraits even further. I also like experimenting with different materials such as painting on jeans or creating a sculpture out of mirrors. It is always freeing to broaden your horizon and be innovational as an artist.

Who or what is your inspiration and why?

With my mom wanting me to be a nurse and my dad who is an architect, I was inspired by my dad and decided to go with my passion art. He motivated and supported me to keep going with my art. Young artist like my friends and people that I interact with at art events regularly inspire me to develop a stronger urge to create.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years I want to be out of college and be able to say I was thankful to have my work in galleries and exhibitions throughout Manhattan. I wish to collaborate with artist and understand different artist's ways of work. Being a part of a community of creators building and networking would help me attain my intentions, achieve and be inspired by fellow artist. As well as being inspired I want to inspire other and show that taking risk can turn out to be successful.

How would you describe your art?

To categorize myself within a certain painting style, I am an expressionist and surrealist. I develop a sightful occurring thought when I create which I attribute to psychology and is sort of an inspiration and connection with my pieces. Being able to create interactive pieces that inspire the viewer to question and make them ponder is my goal. I want to express my opinions based on societal controversies and challenge these norms in my artwork. Throughout my pieces there is a passive debate for the viewers to come up with their own opinions.

How as the recent elections and hate crimes in America affected you as an artist, and your art as well?

Hearing about these obstacles that we as a people are facing saddens me but it should only be a reason to make the change that we need in the world.  "Life imitates Art". The role of an artist in society is to inspire, inform and move people by the creativity within them. To me, an artist can change the world as they create. As an artist, I believe it is my mission to show protest within art and motivate the mass. With supporters who look onto the works of art and feel exhilarated or moved, they can go out and take the feeling of what they got from the piece and in turn diffuse it into the world. The role of an artist can be an activist for what they stand for or a way to show you speaking up and standing for what you believe in can be greatly effective.
